The Weathervane Theatre in Whitefield, New Hampshire, is a place where art and culture come together. In 2021, the theatre marks its 56th anniversary with live professional performances ranging from popular crowd-pleasers like Hello Dolly!, The Addams Family, and American Idiot to new works from young playwrights. Focusing on the local community and the broader world, the theatre is able to bring both popular entertainment and cultural awareness to the White Mountain region of New Hampshire.
The Weathervane Theatre’s new artist-in-residence program gives two emerging playwrights the opportunity to share and workshop their new plays. This year’s program is a partnership with Out of the Box Theatrics, an acclaimed New York City off-Broadway theatre committed to lifting the voices of marginalized communities through the stories it tells. Kevin Renn and Mehrnaz Tiv are the featured playwrights this year, and the weeklong residency program provides them with an opportunity to develop their work in front of live audiences.
“We are really pleased that the Weathervane Theatre is making a difference by amplifying and serving the often-underrepresented voices in the North Country,” says Weathervane Director of Development, Jorge Donoso. “Supporters like Mascoma Bank are essential to us, as their generous contribution helps with the cost of putting on live shows, supports marketing initiatives, and gets people here to the theatre. Thanks to the support of our community and sponsors, the theatre is able to provide educational, entertaining, mission-driven programming.”
Also new this year, the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund is underwriting a program in which current and rising high school seniors from Coös County can get a free pair of tickets to a production of their choice. This program started on May 15—students eligible for this program must be graduating from a high school in Coös County in 2021 or 2022 and be able to show a valid student ID.
